BAIC Group at a Glance: Beijing's State-Owned Auto Giant

BAIC Group — formally Beijing Automotive Group Co., Ltd. — is a state-owned vehicle maker controlled by the Beijing municipal government and headquartered in the city's Shunyi district. Established in 1958 as Beijing Automobile Works, it scored an early hit with the Dongfanghong BJ760, a model derived from a Soviet design. Today it stands as China's sixth-largest automaker by volume, with 1.723 million vehicles sold in 2021 and listed revenue of roughly CN¥480.7 billion.

The group's portfolio mixes home-grown marques such as Arcfox, Beijing, Foton and Ruili with joint ventures producing foreign models — Beijing Benz for Mercedes-Benz and Beijing Hyundai. Commercial, agricultural and military vehicles make up a large share of its sales. Core units include BAIC Motor (44.98% held), which in turn controls 51% of Beijing Benz; truck and bus maker Foton; and BAIC BluePark, the EV arm restructured from Beijing Electric Vehicle that runs the Arcfox brand.

BAIC's history features a landmark 2009 technology deal: after failed attempts to acquire Saab, Volvo and Opel, it bought Saab's intellectual property — three vehicle platforms, 9-3 and 9-5 technology, plus two engine and two transmission systems. Cars built on that know-how were expected in 2012, but the first, the Senova C70 (Shenbao), only reached the market in May 2013. By 2016 the group sold 2.85 million vehicles with operating income of 406.1 billion yuan, and it placed 137th on the Fortune Global 500 the following year.

Strategically, BAIC bought 5% of Daimler in July 2019 and lifted that to 9.98% by December 2021, overtaking Geely as Daimler's largest shareholder. In August 2024 it teamed up with Huawei under the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance to launch the Stelato S9 flagship sedan, the debut model of their joint Stelato brand. Leadership has moved from Xu Heyi (2007–2020) to Jiang Deyi (2020–2024), with Zhang Jianyong chairman since 2024.
