Changan Star small-commercial lineup arrives in South Africa with five body styles

Changan has rolled out its Star range of small commercial vehicles in South Africa, where Jameel Motors serves as the brand's official importer and distributor. Acting as the entry point to Changan's local commercial portfolio, the lineup spans five variants — a Single Cab Dropside, Double Cab Dropside, Panel Van, Box Body and Mini Van — priced between R189 000 and R219 000.

Every version draws on the same 1.25-litre petrol engine, which sends 72 kW and 119 N.m to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. Claimed fuel use sits at 7.5 L/100 km for the Dropside and Box Body models, while the two van variants manage a stated 7.1 L/100 km.

Dimensions and payloads differ by body style. The Single Cab Dropside stretches 4 560 mm with a 2 750 mm load bed and hauls up to 1 090 kg, while the longer Double Cab (4 660 mm) carries 1 070 kg. The Box Body measures 4 615 mm and takes 985 kg, and the compact van pair — both 3 980 mm long on a 2 560 mm wheelbase — handle 710 kg (Panel Van) and 670 kg (Mini Van). The three truck-style variants share a 2 900 mm wheelbase.

Standard kit includes cloth upholstery, a 12 V socket and a multimedia unit with AM/FM radio, USB and MP3 support; the Dropside models add electric windows, with central locking reserved for the Double Cab. Every Star is covered by a five-year/200 000 km warranty, with service and maintenance plans available at extra cost.
