GWM Cannon: Great Wall's Globally Badged Midsize Pickup

One truck, many names — how Great Wall Motor's 2019-debut pickup became the Cannon, Ute, P-Series and Poer across world markets.

The pickup international buyers know as the GWM Cannon carries a long list of market-specific badges: Ute in Australia and New Zealand, P-Series in South Africa, Poer Ruman or Sucan in Brunei, P11 or P12 in Malaysia, and Sahar in Thailand. Great Wall Motor showed the truck at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2019 and has produced it ever since, in passenger, off-road and commercial variants.

Under the skin, the truck rides on Great Wall's P71 platform, shared with the Haval H9, and counts the Tank 300 among its relatives. Powertrain choices span a 147 kW 2.0-litre turbo petrol, 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre turbodiesels, and two electrified options — a 258 kW petrol hybrid tied to a nine-speed automatic, and a battery-electric version announced in September 2020 with up to 405 km of range.

Production is anchored in Baoding, China, with additional assembly at Iracemápolis in Brazil. Customers can pick single, extended or double cab bodies, rear- or four-wheel drive, and manual, ZF eight-speed automatic or hybrid-specific transmissions.

In 2021 ANCAP testing aligned with Euro NCAP protocols, the truck earned 86% for adult occupant protection and 87% for child occupant protection, though its pedestrian protection score was a lower 67%.
