Spain’s new-car market reached a milestone in September 2026: battery-electric cars outsold petrol models for the first time. More than 17,300 pure EVs were registered, giving them an 18.5% share, compared with roughly 15,200 petrol cars and a 16% share. EV registrations were up 71.7% from September a year earlier. Plug-in hybrids included, plug-in vehicles accounted for 31,945 of the 93,858 cars sold that month, or 34% of the market.
For the first nine months of 2026, plug-in registrations totalled 217,298 out of about 912,000 new cars. Non-plug-in hybrids remained the largest category, with 40,996 registrations in September and a 43.7% share. Industry group Anfac attributed the plug-in momentum in part to purchase incentives under the Auto+ plan, which are reserved for plug-in vehicles.
Tesla’s Model 3 led September’s EV rankings with 2,528 registrations, followed by the Model Y with 1,205. Chinese brands had six models in the month’s top 10, including three BYDs, the Leapmotor B10 and two Geelys. The BYD Dolphin Surf ranked third and had reached 4,334 registrations for the year. It starts at €19,990, or below €15,000 with stated discounts and incentives; the BYD Atto 2 starts at €29,990, with a cited incentivised price of €21,975. The report points to lower-priced models and a wider selection as important factors behind the shift away from petrol cars.
