CATL has signed a memorandum of understanding with German energy storage provider Intilion to deploy 3 GWh of sodium-ion energy storage systems in Europe over five years. The companies plan to offer CATL’s Tener Sodium systems in Germany, Switzerland and Austria for grid-scale, commercial and industrial uses. The agreement extends their existing cooperation to sodium-ion technology; the partners say they have deployed more than 30 energy storage projects in Germany since 2022.
CATL says Tener Sodium is designed for harsh European winters, with a cycle life exceeding 15,000 cycles and a stated 25-year operating life. The system is also designed to maintain high discharge power at temperatures as low as -20°C. Its modular layout allows storage duration to be tailored to project needs, and its dimensions are compatible with lithium-ion systems, giving customers flexibility between battery types.
The deal adds to CATL’s European storage partnerships. In July, it agreed with Dutch integrator Alfen on 5 GWh of sodium-ion storage for Western European markets, with deployment due to start in 2027, and signed a separate 2 GWh cooperation agreement with renewable energy company Solarpro in Eastern Europe. CATL also cited market growth: European lithium-ion storage battery shipments reached 72.7 GWh in the first half of 2026, up 74% year on year. Its global shipments of lithium-ion storage batteries rose 81% to 125.0 GWh over the same period.
