Nio has filed a recall plan with China's State Administration for Market Regulation covering 686 Firefly electric cars produced between March 20 and April 2, 2026. The campaign, registered under number S2026M0114V, takes effect immediately.
The fault traces back to the manufacturing process: on certain cars, the wiring harness of the torque sensor on the steering column can make physical contact with the sensor's spiral coil or rotor, sending distorted torque readings to the system. In the most severe scenario, the dashboard shows an electric power steering warning and the steering assist shuts off, raising the safety risk whenever the driver must exert more effort to turn the wheel.
As the remedy, Nio will inspect affected cars free of charge and replace the harness wherever interference is detected. Some vehicles have already been checked and corrected and do not need a second service visit. Owners will be contacted through Nio's smartphone app, SMS, and phone calls to schedule appointments.
Firefly is Nio's small-car EV brand, which began customer deliveries on April 29, 2025 and currently sells just one model. In August 2026 it delivered 5,852 units — up 34.65% year on year and 1.40% versus July — bringing cumulative deliveries for the first eight months of 2026 to 40,795.
