BYD’s battery arm FinDreams Battery has agreed with Changsha Fusheng Technology to develop battery packs for locomotives and other vehicles used at mines, industrial sites and rail yards. The partnership would extend the Blade battery into another heavy-duty market. BYD already has a rail presence: São Paulo’s Line 17-Gold is set to use the company’s SkyRail monorail system and trains.

Blade packs are also used in buses, commercial vehicles and heavy trucks. In June, BYD delivered 100 electric dump trucks fitted with 424 kWh battery packs. FinDreams is pursuing further mining applications and also supplies stationary energy-storage systems for homes, businesses and larger installations connected to the grid or renewable power.

The expansion comes as BYD seeks to narrow the gap with CATL. In the first seven months of 2026, CATL installed 289.6 GWh of batteries for a 39.9% global share, compared with BYD’s 106.7 GWh and 14.7%. BYD is also developing sodium-ion batteries for lower-cost uses and stationary storage, alongside solid-state cells. It expects the first cars using solid-state technology to arrive in 2027 in limited volumes, with production expansion targeted around 2030.

Unlike CATL, which supplies major automakers including Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and Kia, BYD uses a substantial share of its own battery output in its vehicles. The article identifies sales to external customers, as well as applications beyond cars, as important ways for BYD to grow its battery business.
