BYD’s Shark plug-in hybrid pickup has received a five-star rating from Euro NCAP, the organisation’s top safety score. The model is making its European debut this week at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, with broader expansion across Europe planned for the first half of 2027.

The Shark scored 82% for adult-occupant protection and 86% for child-occupant protection. Euro NCAP noted its performance in frontal and side-impact tests, including protection for child dummies representing six- and ten-year-olds. The pickup also has a system that can detect a child left inside the vehicle and issue an alert.

It recorded 74% for vulnerable road-user protection and 87% for safety assistance. Evaluated systems included autonomous emergency braking for cyclists, motorcyclists and other vehicles, as well as lane-keeping assistance and speed-limit recognition.

BYD’s Super Hybrid DMO setup pairs two electric motors, producing a combined 430 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, with a 1.5-litre turbocharged gasoline engine. The company claims a 0–100 km/h time of 5.7 seconds, up to 675 km of combined range with a full battery and fuel tank, and up to 90 km of electric-only driving. Its 32.2-kWh Blade battery supports the plug-in hybrid system. The five-seat, double-cab pickup also offers vehicle-to-load power outlets and features including a 15.6-inch display and 360-degree camera. BYD says this is its ninth five-star Euro NCAP result since entering Europe in 2022; the Shark has been available in Chile since April 2025.
