CATL chairman warns rushed EV launch cycles are producing batch battery failures in China

Speaking at the World Power Battery Conference in Yibin, Sichuan, on September 3, CATL chairman Robin Zeng tied emerging battery-quality trouble to China's frenetic product cadence and price competition. With more than 600 new models reaching the market in 2026, validation windows have shrunk, and several power battery products have already suffered batch-level failures, he said. He stopped short of naming the automakers or cell suppliers involved.

The backdrop is heavy cost pressure: transaction prices for some mass-market electric cars fell in the first half of 2026, and LFP cells changed hands below 0.35 yuan (about $0.049) per watt-hour. Quality disputes have surfaced before — Geely's Viridi unit sued supplier Sunwoda over defective cells in a case settled for 608 million yuan, and faulty CALB cells that swelled in roughly 213,000 GAC Aion cars became known as the "banana battery" affair.

Zeng argued that parts-per-million defect tolerances don't scale to batteries, because in a series-connected pack a single weak cell limits the whole string, the so-called barrel effect. CATL says it holds itself to a target of no more than one defective cell per billion produced, and that its internal adversarial team — staffed across electrochemistry, mechanical engineering and AI — can veto project milestones and shipments.

Scale sharpens the stakes. Per SNE Research, 608 GWh of power batteries were installed globally in the first half of 2026, with Chinese suppliers taking more than 70% of volume and seven of the top ten positions. Zeng's core question is whether compressed development cycles still leave enough time to catch latent defects before mass production.
