Chery is preparing to enter Japan’s kei-car market with a small electric vehicle under the Emta brand, following BYD’s move into the segment with the Racco. The car is expected to launch in 2027, and recently filed patent images have provided a first look at its exterior. The report does not give a price or technical specifications.
Emta is associated with Electric Mobility Technologies (EMT), a Singapore-based venture formed by Chery Automobile, Jiangsu Yueda Automobile Group, Japan’s Autobacs Seven, Gotion and Anest Iwata. EMT previously displayed its first vehicle concept: a tall, box-shaped design marked “#01” near the lower part of the rear door.
The patent drawings show a narrow central black grille between upper and lower front grille sections, with the headlights and lower fog lamps positioned below the hood line. The body appears widened to the legal limit for kei cars, while the wheels sit relatively far inward. Conventional handles are shown, with the rear handle beside the B-pillar; a track-like detail suggests sliding doors. A rear light bar echoes the front lighting. Another version adds extensive plastic body cladding and a differently styled front bumper for a more rugged, light off-road look.
