A Chery Omoda 5 was photographed in Malaysia with its rear axle detached from the body, while the wheel remained attached. Images shared on social media show the car stopped across the road. A separate video appears to show damage to the right rear door and a motorcycle behind the SUV, but it is not known whether the two vehicles were involved in a collision.
Malaysia’s Johor police had not issued a statement at the time of the report, and Chery had not commented. Videos also showed a motorcyclist and two other people at the roadside; none appeared visibly injured. Online speculation included the possibility that the SUV had failed to stop after a vehicle ahead braked suddenly, but this has not been verified. Mechanical failure has also been suggested, though no cause has been established.
The report notes that the Omoda 5 had previously faced an axle-related issue in Malaysia. It says a dealer recall covered 600 vehicles over the risk of a similar problem, while also reporting that an investigation traced axle breakages to incorrect calibration of automated welding equipment and that 60 Omoda 5s built in August 2023 were recalled. Chery had said it would report inspection results and the root cause to Malaysia’s Transport Ministry.
