Chery has confirmed specifications for the Stockman, a new midsize pickup intended to compete with models such as the BYD Shark and the upcoming GWM Poer. Its plug-in hybrid system is unusual for the segment: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel works with an electric motor and a 34-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. Combined output is 479 hp and 81.5 kgfm of torque. The Shark is quoted at 469 hp and 71.4 kgfm, using a gasoline-based hybrid system.
Chery says the Stockman can travel up to 96 km on electric power alone and tow as much as 3,495 kg, matching figures cited for the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max. Its four-wheel-drive setup comes with locking front, center and rear differentials as standard. The front suspension uses a double-wishbone design, while the rear retains leaf springs, a setup that reflects the truck’s work and off-road focus.
Inside, equipment includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, a 14-speaker audio system and a suite of advanced driver-assistance features. Chery also plans a gasoline-hybrid Stockman with independent rear suspension. Initial deliveries are expected early next year in markets including Australia. A Brazilian import has not been confirmed by Caoa Chery. In Australia, the top-spec BYD Shark starts at A$62,900.
