China recorded 281,000 retail sales of passenger new energy vehicles (NEVs) from October 1 to 11, down 13% year on year and 7% from the same period in September, according to China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) data released October 14. NEVs accounted for 61.2% of passenger-vehicle retail sales, below September’s 67.0% rate. Retail NEV sales for the year to date reached 8.04 million, also 13% lower than a year earlier.
Wholesale figures were stronger: automakers sold 301,000 NEVs to dealers in the first 11 days of October, up 6% year on year but down 11% from the comparable September period. Year-to-date NEV wholesale sales totaled 11.75 million, up 9%, and wholesale NEV penetration was 78.1%. The CPCA linked the strength in wholesale penetration in part to exports.
Across all passenger vehicles, retail sales totaled 459,000 in October 1–11, down 24% year on year but up 7% month on month. The CPCA said National Day auto shows, local subsidies and automakers’ seasonal promotions supported a modest recovery, while holiday timing affected early-month comparisons. It also noted that gasoline-vehicle production and wholesale sales fell sharply in the first two weeks of October, weighing on the overall market. The association had previously forecast NEV penetration above 65% for October.
