China recorded 827,000 retail sales of passenger new energy vehicles (NEVs) from Sept. 1 to 27, down 20% from a year earlier but 2% higher than in the same period of August. The year-on-year drop widened from 9% in the first 20 days of the month. NEVs made up 65.7% of passenger-car retail sales, compared with 67.9% through Sept. 20.

The overall passenger-car market saw 1.258 million retail sales during the 27-day period, a 29% annual decline. The China Passenger Car Association said last September’s rush to buy ahead of subsidy suspensions in some regions created a high comparison base. It also linked a sharp drop in fourth-week daily sales partly to the Mid-Autumn Festival falling at a different time this year.

Passenger NEV wholesale sales totaled 1.032 million, down 11% year on year. Despite September’s weakness, year-to-date NEV retail sales stood at 7.5 million, down 13%, while wholesale sales rose 7% to 10.81 million. The association said this year’s peak sales season is increasingly a contest for existing demand, with additional demand concentrated in NEVs.
