China NEV retail slips 4% to 1.07 million in August, but penetration hits record 65.7%

Retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles in China came in at 1.069 million units in August, preliminary China Passenger Car Association data shows — 4% below a year earlier but 12% better than July, extending a losing streak that has now run for eight consecutive months. Year-to-date NEV retail volume stands at 6.737 million, down 11% from the same stretch of 2025.

The share story was more upbeat: NEVs took a record 65.7% of passenger vehicle retail sales during the month, up from July's 65.1%. Wholesale was far healthier, with NEV shipments to dealers rising 16% year on year to 1.506 million. The broader market remained weak, as total passenger vehicle retail fell 19% to 1.626 million amid what the CPCA described as continued collapse in gasoline car demand.

The association pointed to a mix of headwinds: shipping disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz pushed up oil prices, and two rounds of fuel-price hikes totaling nearly 985 yuan per ton raised running costs for combustion models. Heat-related production breaks at major automakers, flooding in some regions, and cautious consumers holding off on big-ticket purchases all weighed on the market. Offsets came late in the month from back-to-school demand, ample trade-in subsidy funding, and new model debuts at the Chengdu Auto Show.

With consumption-support measures kicking in and tougher comparison bases easing, the CPCA expects the market's declines to narrow steadily, positioning the industry for the traditional September-October peak season.
