Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) has temporarily suspended new registrations of the Chery Omoda 5 after another reported rear-axle separation. The latest incident occurred on October 6, 2026, and the axle reportedly detached from the vehicle. No injuries were reported. A similar case involving the model was reported in Malaysia in April 2024.

JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the repeat incident had raised public safety concerns. The department has asked Chery Malaysia to identify potentially affected vehicles using part numbers, production batches, VINs and other technical information. JPJ also plans to inspect the Omoda 5 production process and the facility making the relevant component, including quality controls and the welding of its mounting points.

The registration suspension will remain until Chery has remedied the problem and JPJ confirms that the relevant safety issues have been resolved. Chery Malaysia said it would cooperate with the authority and has announced a no-cost campaign to inspect Omoda 5 vehicles and replace parts where necessary. Owners can check their VIN through the company’s website or contact a service center for details.
