MG is defending the towing credentials of its U9 EV electric ute in Australia, pointing to the country’s expanding public charging network while acknowledging that it has not published a towing-range figure. The company says it has towed a 2.8-tonne caravan from metropolitan Sydney to Gerringong on the South Coast, and advises customers to plan their journeys around charging stops.
The U9 EV is rated to tow up to 3.5 tonnes with a braked trailer, matching the top-rated diesel Ford Ranger and exceeding the Toyota HiLux BEV’s 2-tonne rating and the KGM Musso EV’s 1.8–2.3-tonne range. Its WLTP range is 430km, compared with 245km for the HiLux BEV and 380–420km for the Musso EV. Heavy towing can increase energy use substantially; the article estimates the U9 EV could manage about 200km under load, but stresses that this is not an MG-tested figure.
MG says a suitable DC fast charger can replenish the battery from 20 to 80 per cent in 42 minutes, at up to 115kW. Australia had 4,268 public AC and DC charging locations by June 2026, a 235 per cent increase year on year, according to the Electric Vehicle Council. That network is still smaller than the roughly 8,000 service stations counted by the ACCC in 2026. Without a verified towing-range result, the charging frequency for caravan trips remains uncertain.
