A video circulating in China appears to show a BYD Fangchengbao Bao 8 driving away from a parking clamp by lifting its front-left wheel off the ground. The footage was filmed in Jinshan town, Lianyungang. The dark-green SUV reportedly raised the wheel by about 30 cm, leaving the clamp suspended above the pavement as the vehicle moved on its other three wheels.

The maneuver was made possible by the Bao 8’s DiSus-P Ultra active hydraulic suspension. The system can raise an individual wheel mechanically, and BYD developed it in part to make tire changes possible without a separate jack. If a tire is damaged, the vehicle can also travel at speeds of up to 15 km/h to reach a safer service location, according to the report.

BYD’s published figures cited in the article put the system’s vertical lifting force above 8,600 kg, and say it can keep a wheel raised for as long as 24 hours. The feature is also intended to help the SUV negotiate large rocks, logs and deep ruts off-road. The incident has prompted discussion of alternative enforcement tools, including remote-controlled towing robots and the Barnacle windshield device used in some US cities, which blocks the driver’s view.
