BYD is considering investment in battery production and energy-storage systems in Argentina, according to Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno, who met the automaker’s global vice-president Stella Li in Singapore. Quirno said the opportunities relate to Argentina’s lithium value chain, with the country potentially serving both domestic demand and export markets. The discussions are exploratory; BYD has not announced a factory decision, timetable or investment amount.
The meeting came as BYD marked one year since its official launch in Argentina on October 8, 2026. The company said it had sold more than 10,000 vehicles in the country and established over 20 official sales locations. Its local range includes fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, while the company’s anniversary materials list seven models launched and an eighth available for pre-sale. BYD also described the Dolphin Mini as Argentina’s best-selling fully electric vehicle.
The report says this is the first time Li has spoken about a battery factory in Argentina. BYD has previously discussed local industrial activity: in 2017, when it received automaker status in the country, Li spoke with then-President Mauricio Macri about possible production of electric buses. The latest talks broaden that earlier industrialization prospect, but remain at the investment-opportunity stage.
