Chery South Africa has named its upcoming KP31 double-cab pickup the Grootman, following a public naming campaign that drew more than 20,000 submissions. The name was selected from a shortlist of six and reflects a respected, dependable figure in South African usage. In Australia, the same pickup will be sold as the Stockman.
The Grootman is scheduled to launch in South Africa in the first quarter of 2027. Chery says its plug-in hybrid system pairs a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine with electric motors, delivering 350 kW and 800 Nm, with four-wheel drive and an electric-only range of up to 100 km under the NEDC cycle.
Built on Chery’s Kaitan ladder-frame platform, the pickup measures 5,450 mm long and has a quoted braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg. Local prices, versions and final specifications are expected closer to launch.
