South Africa's news this week combined two prices in the market now and two Chery Group plans for 2027, one of them a first for local production.
Local production
Omoda's C4 compact SUV will be the first Chery Group model built in South Africa, at the group's Rosslyn plant near Pretoria, with the first cars expected by mid-2027. The former Nissan plant, acquired by Chery earlier this year and opened in July, has an initial target of 15,000 vehicles (2,500 a month), a six-month ramp-up across the third and fourth quarters of 2027, and a maximum annual capacity of 50,000. The C4 is expected to sit below the Omoda C5, which costs R339,900 to R469,900; pricing and specifications are not announced. Other models listed for Rosslyn include the Chery Grootman and Tiggo Cross, the Jaecoo J5 and the Jetour T1 and T2. Chery has also registered design drawings for a compact double-cab pickup with South Africa's patent service; its size is unclear and it is not a launch announcement.
New prices
GWM's 2026 Haval H7 is on sale in six versions, with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol from R554,900, a conventional hybrid from R624,900 and plug-in hybrids from R734,900. All carry a seven-year/200,000 km warranty. It follows a preview ahead of the October 22 launch. BAIC's Arcfox has started sales with the T1 electric crossover from R359,900 (Pro) and R399,900 (Max), with a 42.3 kWh battery and a claimed 310 km of range, against the Chery Q, BYD Dolphin Surf and Geely E2. A review of the iCaur 03T iWD found a well-equipped all-wheel-drive electric SUV.
Coming in 2027
Chery confirmed the off-road-styled Tiggo X7 for the third quarter of 2027, with all-wheel drive and a plug-in hybrid expected; South African specifications and prices are not yet announced.
What it means
- Chery's Rosslyn plant moves from announcement to a dated first model, but volumes are targets, not output.
- The H7 and T1 launches put prices on a broad range, from R359,900 to R794,900 across the week's reported models.
- The Chery Group's 2027 items are plans without prices.
