A Chery Omoda 5 lost its complete rear suspension assembly while on a road in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, on October 6, leaving the car stranded in a traffic lane. Images and dashcam footage show the torsion beam, related suspension and brake components, and both rear wheels detached behind the vehicle. No injuries were reported. Dents were also visible on the right rear passenger door, but their connection to the incident has not been established.
The failure recalls a separate Malaysian Omoda 5 axle-beam break in April 2024. That case led to a Chery Auto Malaysia inspection campaign covering 600 vehicles. The company said 60 cars had received components from an affected production batch, and attributed the earlier defect to insufficient weld penetration after a supplier’s automated welding equipment was not correctly recalibrated following maintenance. The campaign covered axles made between August 14 and 17, 2023.
It is not known whether the car involved in the latest incident was part of the campaign, had been inspected, or used an axle from the affected production period. Photographs alone do not identify where the assembly failed, and Chery Auto Malaysia had not released a technical report or confirmed the vehicle’s production date at the time of publication. The earlier campaign concerned the Malaysian-market petrol Omoda 5 with torsion-beam rear suspension; its findings should not be assumed to apply to the electric Omoda E5, which has a different rear suspension design. Omoda 5s for Malaysia are assembled locally by Inokom from CKD kits.
