A Chery Omoda 5 in Malaysia was pictured with its rear axle detached from the vehicle, according to a report published on Oct. 7, 2026. Photos shared on social media showed the damaged car, while a separate video appeared to show two tow trucks transporting the vehicle and the detached axle separately. The incident’s circumstances and cause had not been established in the report. Johor police had not issued a statement, and Chery had not provided details about what happened.

The incident recalls a 2024 safety campaign in Malaysia, when Chery recalled 600 Omoda 5s over the possibility of rear-axle failure. Chery said affected vehicles would receive replacement components and comprehensive quality checks. The company linked the potentially affected vehicles to an upgrade at a parts facility and said it had investigated the matter with its supplier.

The issue also led to a recall in Indonesia. PT Chery Sales Indonesia identified 420 Omoda 5s for inspection based on their vehicle identification numbers; if a check found a potential problem, the relevant part would be replaced at no charge. The latest Malaysian incident had not yet been connected by officials or Chery to either earlier recall.
