Chery is recalling 8,878 Omoda 5 SUVs in Malaysia after a 2023 vehicle lost its rear axle while being driven in Johor Bahru on October 6. No one was injured. Chery said welds on the rear axle trailing arms in vehicles from an affected production batch may be too weak and could rupture under extreme conditions.
Chery Malaysia is coordinating with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to inspect the vehicles and replace components free of charge where needed. The recall covers the C and H variants; the company has not identified the affected production years. Chery said the design used in the affected batch has been discontinued and that the recall does not cover models currently on sale.
JPJ suspended the Omoda 5’s vehicle type approval and new registrations on October 11, pending a technical investigation. It has asked Chery Malaysia to identify potentially affected vehicles by part number, batch and VIN, and plans to audit production, assembly and the rear-axle supplier. Chery has also started precautionary checks on Omoda 5s from the same batch in China and other relevant markets.
This is the model’s second Malaysian recall related to rear axle issues. In 2024, Chery recalled 600 vehicles after another detachment; the investigation identified 60 units built on August 15, 2023, for axle replacement. Malaysia discontinued the Omoda 5 and replaced it with the Chery O5 in September 2025. Chery has not said whether the latest case shares the earlier defect.
