Vehicles of Chinese origin made up 56.8% of new-vehicle sales in Ecuador during the first nine months of 2026, according to figures from the Ecuadorian Automotive Business Association (Aeade). The country recorded 123,927 new vehicles sold between January and September, including 15,649 in September. The report says Ecuador’s market grew 40.3% in 2026.
The origin-based share includes more than sales by Chinese-owned brands such as Chery, BYD, Changan, Great Wall Motor and JAC. It also counts vehicles made or assembled in China by international manufacturers and then exported to Ecuador, reflecting China’s role as both a home for expanding automakers and a production base for global brands.
In the individual-brand ranking, Kia led, followed by Chevrolet and Great Wall Motor. Hyundai and Toyota came next. Chery, Dongfeng, JAC and BYD also placed among Ecuador’s ten best-selling brands. The article points to price and equipment value, model variety and the wider availability of electrified vehicles as factors behind Chinese brands’ growing appeal.
The report presents Ecuador as an example of a broader shift in Latin American competition. Chinese brands have not reached the same market share in Colombia, but their presence is expanding there, with more than ten Asian brands expected to debut locally the following month, according to the article.
