GWM’s diesel-powered Poer P30 has found stronger sales in Brazil than the BYD Shark, despite facing doubts inside GWM before launch. In an interview with Motor1 Brasil, COO Diego Fernandes said the move away from the company’s original hybrid plan was harder to accept internally than in the market. The Poer P30 is currently the second-best seller in its price band of R$200,000 to R$250,000, according to Fernandes.

GWM began operating in Brazil in April 2023 with an electrified line-up built around the Haval H6 hybrid and Ora 03 electric car. After more than two years focused on those technologies, it expanded into diesel vehicles with the Haval H9 and Poer P30. Fernandes said the company’s understanding of local buyer preferences, alongside its pickup experience in China, helped prompt the change. Pickup customers can be cautious about switching brands and weigh durability, maintenance and payload capacity.

Launched in September 2025 and built in Iracemápolis, São Paulo state, the Poer P30 sold about 5,000 units from January through September 2026. GWM still has hybrid and plug-in hybrid pickups in its wider range, and Fernandes said those options could come to Brazil when the company sees sufficient demand or an opportunity to encourage adoption. He gave no timetable, and noted that some hybrid pickups in the market have not met sales expectations.
