JAC shares hit their daily limit in China on Thursday after a brake-test video involving the Huawei-JAC Maextro V800 drew widespread attention on Chinese social media. JAC ended the morning session at 24.72 yuan, down 10.01%, reversing several days of gains.
In the video, automotive platform Dongchedi reports that all three V800 MPVs it tested suffered brake-pedal bracket failures during emergency stops from 100 km/h. The first failure occurred on the third braking attempt, the second on the fourth, and a third newly purchased vehicle failed on its second attempt. The testers said they could no longer brake normally with the pedal and stopped the vehicles using the emergency-braking function accessed through the Park control.
The reported test results have not been confirmed by an official investigation, and JAC and Huawei’s Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance had not issued a response by publication. Online discussion included calls for JAC to investigate as well as questions about whether repeated hard braking was conducted under suitable standards and reflected normal road use.
JAC and Huawei jointly developed Maextro, whose V800 flagship MPV launched on August 5 at prices from 766,000 to 1,016,000 yuan (about $113,710 to $150,800). It is aimed at the high-end business market, where the Toyota Alphard and Lexus LM are rivals. JAC has said it plans to invest in the ultra-luxury segment and broaden Maextro’s lineup.
