MG Motor Australia has published complete details of its U9 EV electric ute, and the brand says Australia will be the first market anywhere to get it. Local pricing and delivery timing are still unconfirmed — unlike in Nepal, where pricing has already been revealed — though the truck made its in-person Australian debut back in April. It now looks likely to reach showrooms ahead of its mechanical twin, the LDV eTerron 9, which was green-lit for an early-2025 launch in November 2024, has been certified and even spied testing locally, yet still hasn't arrived.

The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive ute combines a 102.2kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with a combined output of 325kW and 700Nm, good for a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.8 seconds. WLTP range stands at 430km, with DC charging at up to 115kW restoring 20-80 per cent in 42 minutes and AC charging capped at 11kW. Vehicle-to-load output runs to 6.6kW via the external port, plus 2.2kW from each of three in-cabin outlets.

MG positions the U9 EV as a "lifestyle ute", but its 3500kg braked towing capacity matches the diesel Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux. Payload is 685kg, the tub swallows a standard pallet, and there's a 236-litre compartment under the bonnet. Four-wheel air suspension — absent on the diesel U9 — joins a kit list featuring massaging leather front seats, dual 12.3-inch displays, a JBL sound system and a hands-free tailgate. For context, the diesel U9 currently starts at $59,990 drive-away.

Parent company SAIC describes the MG and LDV utes as semi-monocoque in construction, and against the only other electric utes currently sold in Australia — the Toyota HiLux BEV and KGM Musso EV — the MG comfortably wins on range, towing and output. MG claims a five-star ANCAP rating that has yet to be formally published, though Euro NCAP awarded the same score in 2024.
