MG plans to expand its HS midsize-SUV range in South Africa with conventional hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions arriving in January 2027. The locally sold HS, introduced in January 2025, currently comes with 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines producing 125 kW and 170 kW respectively. Pricing and final local equipment details for the new variants have not yet been announced.

The Hybrid+ pairs a 105 kW, 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with an electric motor and a 1.83 kWh battery. Its combined output is 165 kW and 340 N.m, sent to the front wheels through a three-speed hybrid transmission. MG gives fuel consumption as 5.7 L/100 km and estimates a 965 km range from the 55-litre tank.

The Super Hybrid plug-in uses the same petrol engine, but adds a front electric motor and a 24.7 kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery. The front-wheel-drive system produces 220 kW and 350 N.m. MG claims up to 120 km of electric-only range and more than 1,000 km combined; quoted combined consumption is 0.7 L/100 km with the battery charged.

Both electrified HS versions are 4,660 mm long, with a 2,765 mm wheelbase, and offer 507 litres of luggage space, rising to 1,484 litres with the rear seatbacks folded. They are expected to follow the existing Comfort and Luxury grades. Current petrol HS prices range from R499,900 to R665,900, and the hybrids are expected to cost more.
