A Nio-led electric-drive project received First Prize in the 2026 China Society of Automotive Engineers Science and Technology Progress Awards, announced on October 28. Developed with Tongji University, Harbin University of Science and Technology and Baoshan Iron & Steel, the 925V system combines a continuous-wave winding design, integrated thermal management and charging that reuses drive components to raise voltage. It entered mass production in December 2024.

The project reports motor power density of 19.06 kW/kg and controller power density of 226.92 kW/L. Its voltage-boosted charging function reached a reported peak of 202.78 kW; real-world output varies with the charger and vehicle conditions. The W-Pin winding uses 12 flat copper conductors, each five metres long, shaped into 24 bends. The manufacturing process controls insulation thickness to 0.14 mm and assembly tolerances to within 0.02 mm, while avoiding repeated wire rotation that could damage insulation.

Testing included 1,300 hours of continuous high-temperature operation, more than 500 hours of simulated high-altitude operation at 5,500 metres, vibration testing up to 5.5g, and exposure to temperatures from -40°C to +85°C. Nio says the technology is fitted to the ET9, ES8 and ES9, as well as Onvo’s L90 and L80. The project reports production at million-unit scale, 146 authorised patents and contributions to six Chinese national automotive standards.
