An Omoda 5 was left stranded on a road in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, on October 6 after its rear suspension assembly separated from the vehicle. Dashcam images showed the SUV stopped on Jalan Pandan near AEON Mall Tebrau City, with the rear wheels, torsion beam, suspension arms, shock absorbers and brake lines on the pavement. No injuries were reported. Damage was also visible on the right rear door, though its connection to the incident is unclear.

The failure brings back a similar case reported in Malaysia in April 2024. That episode led Chery Auto Malaysia to announce an inspection campaign for 600 vehicles. Investigators found 60 Omoda 5s fitted with potentially affected components made on August 15, 2023; the campaign covered rear axle assemblies produced between August 14 and 17.

Chery said the earlier defect stemmed from incomplete weld penetration after a foreign supplier replaced an automated welding tip during maintenance but did not recalibrate the equipment. The affected Malaysian-market model uses a torsion-beam rear suspension, unlike the electric Omoda E5. Omoda 5s for Malaysia were assembled by Inokom in Kulim using imported parts in CKD form, and that version had a 1.5-liter turbo engine, front-wheel drive and a CVT.

Chery Auto Malaysia had not issued a technical report on the October incident or confirmed the vehicle’s production date. It is also unknown whether this SUV was among the 600 vehicles, whether it had been inspected, or whether the current failure has the same cause as the 2024 cases. An examination of the suspension and the vehicle’s production and service records will be needed to establish what happened.
