BYD has kicked off the domestic marketing push for its Shark pickup, with official images posted on Weibo on September 24 by both the parent brand and its Fang Cheng Bao division under the slogan "The overseas champion returns." No launch date or pricing was revealed, though the model has already cleared a key regulatory step.

The plug-in hybrid truck is an oddity in BYD's lineup: it premiered in Mexico in May 2024 and has since spread to Brazil, Australia, Cambodia and Pakistan, all before reaching its home market. CnEVPost's tally puts its August overseas sales at 4,300 and its total for the first eight months of 2026 at 29,997. Executive hints about a China launch began in October 2025, and the truck surfaced in a Ministry of Industry and Information Technology filing catalog in July.

The Chinese filing matches the export version's dimensions — 5,457 mm long with a 3,260 mm wheelbase — and pairs a 1.5-liter turbo engine with front and rear motors rated at 170 kW and 150 kW. Power comes from a FinDreams LFP battery on BYD's DMO off-road hybrid platform; capacity and range figures for the domestic version are still under wraps.

Bringing the Shark under Fang Cheng Bao gives BYD an entrant in a segment currently contested by GWM and Geely's Radar brand. Pickups remain a small niche in China, where policy constraints have limited demand: just 455,000 units were sold from January through August, 62,000 of them new energy models — an 18% year-on-year gain, per the CPCA.
