MG’s U9 EV has arrived in Australia as a fully electric dual-cab ute, and a first drive in rural New South Wales found it combines strong performance with practical features. The model is priced at A$78,990 before on-road costs—about A$22,000 above the diesel U9 Explore Pro—and faces competition from the Toyota HiLux BEV, KGM Musso EV and plug-in hybrid utes including the BYD Shark 6 and GWM Cannon Alpha.
The U9 EV uses dual motors, all-wheel drive and a 102.2kWh LFP battery, producing 325kW and 700Nm. MG quotes a 430km WLTP range and a 5.8-second 0–100km/h time. Its 3,500kg braked towing rating exceeds those of the HiLux BEV and Musso EV, but the 685kg payload can be quickly consumed when towing. Maximum DC charging is 115kW; MG says charging from 20 to 80 per cent takes 42 minutes on a suitable fast charger.
The cabin is spacious and well equipped, with leather seats, heating and ventilation up front, driver massage functions and wireless phone connectivity. The 1,200-litre tub includes tie-down points and two 2.2kW outlets, while a 236-litre front storage compartment adds further utility. The rear seat has generous passenger room, though it lacks a folding armrest and rear-seat heating.
On the test drive, the heavy ute delivered effortless acceleration but felt cumbersome through bends, with slow steering and noticeable body roll. Its size may also make tight urban spaces challenging. The review’s early verdict is that the U9 EV offers a compelling mix of electric-ute capability and comfort, but its price, slow fast-charging and limited payload temper its appeal.
