August 2026 delivery roundup: BYD on top as Leapmotor and Zeekr extend record runs

BYD led the field with 440,293 new energy vehicles sold in August, its strongest month of 2026 and a fourth straight year-on-year increase. Overseas volume hit a record 189,466 units — roughly 43% of the total — more than offsetting a 14.3% decline at home. Among the broader groups, SAIC reported 357,007 units, Chery Group 280,128 and Geely Auto 270,194.

The startup ranks diverged further. Leapmotor crossed the 100,000 mark for a second consecutive month at 103,129, up 80.7% year-on-year and a fifth straight record, though its sequential growth was the slowest since March. Zeekr more than doubled its year-ago figure to 36,981, also a fifth consecutive monthly high. Xpeng rebounded to 39,107, its second-best month of the year, while Li Auto jumped 32.1% to 37,679 — its fastest annual growth in two years and an end to three months of decline.

Nio stayed above 35,000 for a fourth month at 35,836, with main-brand sales doubling to cover another weak showing at Onvo. Huawei's HIMA alliance slid 5.5% year-on-year to 42,101, a third consecutive annual drop despite a wave of new model launches, and Xiaomi once again disclosed only that deliveries topped 30,000 for a fifth straight month.
