BYD King Outsells the Toyota Corolla in Brazil for August, but

The Chinese plug-in hybrid sedan moved 1,433 units last month against 855 for its Japanese rival, yet the Corolla keeps a comfortable lead in the 2026 year-to-date tally.

The BYD King claimed the top spot among Brazil's best-selling new midsize sedans in August, edging out its biggest rival, the Toyota Corolla. Figures from consultancy K.Lume show 1,433 registrations for the Chinese plug-in hybrid versus 855 for the Toyota.

The monthly win doesn't change the annual picture, though. Across 2026 so far, the Corolla remains ahead with 15,546 units against 11,243 for the King.

The two cars take different technical paths. The Corolla is offered in five trims starting at R$ 177,590, with a 2.0 naturally aspirated engine or a full-hybrid 1.8 setup rated at 122 hp combined. The King comes only as a plug-in hybrid, in GL and GS trims priced at R$ 172,990 and R$ 175,990, pairing a 1.5 engine with an electric motor for 209 hp or 235 hp depending on whether the battery is the 8.3 kWh or 18.3 kWh unit.

In a recent Quatro Rodas comparison between the range-topping King GS and the Corolla Altis Premium, the BYD also proved slightly more efficient, averaging 18.7 km/l in the city and 16.4 km/l on the highway against 18.1 and 15.7 km/l for the Toyota.
