In Vietnam, the BYD Sealion 5 DM-i Essential and Mazda CX-5 2.0 Deluxe are both being offered for VND 659 million, putting a plug-in hybrid and a gasoline SUV in direct competition. Their list prices are VND 739 million and VND 699 million respectively. BYD’s offer is for its first 1,000 customers, while the Mazda discount depends on individual dealers; the Sealion 5 is imported and the CX-5 is locally assembled.

The BYD is the larger vehicle on most listed dimensions: it measures 4,735 mm long and has a 2,712 mm wheelbase, compared with 4,590 mm and 2,700 mm for the Mazda. Its ground clearance is lower, however, at 175 mm versus 200 mm. The Sealion 5 also gets an 18-inch display, wireless phone connectivity and NFC and Bluetooth phone-key functions. The CX-5 counters with 19-inch wheels, automatic wipers, a powered driver’s seat and dual-zone climate control; both have six speakers and rear air vents.

Their powertrains are the biggest distinction. The Sealion 5 combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor, has a 13.08-kWh battery and is rated for up to 82 km of electric-only travel or 1,150 km in combined use. The CX-5 uses a 2.0-liter gasoline engine. Both versions lack ADAS and have six airbags, but the Mazda adds blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warnings. The comparison presents the BYD as the choice for plug-in capability and the Mazda as having some practical comfort and safety equipment advantages.
