CATL, Octopus Energy and battery maker Ampace have signed a strategic memorandum of understanding to explore home energy storage in Europe, with the UK, France and Spain among their priority markets. The agreement broadens CATL and Octopus Energy’s cooperation beyond commercial vehicles into household energy solutions.

Under the proposed arrangement, CATL will contribute technology and supply-chain support. Ampace will handle research, development and manufacturing for battery cells, battery management systems and storage systems. Octopus Energy will bring its European customer channels, dynamic electricity-tariff algorithms and access to virtual power plant services.

The partners will also examine ways to connect home storage with rooftop solar, smart charging, vehicle-to-grid services and virtual power plants, so household batteries can support grid dispatch. CATL said the work is intended to lower household power bills and improve grid flexibility and resilience. The companies may also develop co-branded home energy products; the announcement did not provide launch dates or product specifications.

The agreement follows a June 2026 plan by CATL and Octopus Energy to form an equal joint venture for bringing Qiji Energy battery-swapping technology to Europe’s heavy-duty truck market. Their plan called for the first demonstration swapping stations to begin operating in the UK in 2027, initially along major highways and at key logistics ports.
