Chery has announced a recall in China covering 53,882 vehicles from its Tiggo 5x and Omoda lines, following a Malaysian incident in which an Omoda 5’s rear axle separated while driving on October 6. Malaysia’s road transport department suspended approval of the model and stopped new registrations while it investigates. Chery also called back 8,878 pre-facelift Omoda 5 C and H variants in Malaysia for inspection and, if needed, component replacement at no cost.

China’s market regulator, SAMR, published the recall notice on November 6. It covers vehicles manufactured between June 6, 2022, and December 31, 2023, with the campaign scheduled to begin on November 27, 2026. The identified risk is an incomplete weld joining the rear-wheel locating arm to the axle. Under extreme conditions, that joint could break and increase the risk of a crash. Chery will check axle production-date codes and replace components from the affected batch free of charge; the recall does not mean every covered vehicle has the defect.

SAMR has not disclosed the number of vehicles affected by model, the axle supplier or the factories involved. It also has not established a shared cause or production link between the Chinese recall and the Malaysian cases. Malaysia had a separate recall of 600 Omoda 5s in 2024, which Chery attributed to welding equipment that became misadjusted after a tip was replaced. The current defect does not apply to Omoda 5 vehicles sold in Brazil.
