China's NEV sales up 17.8% in August to 1.64 million, holding above 60% of the market for a second month

New energy vehicle sales in China reached 1.643 million units in August, a jump of 17.8% from a year earlier and 5.3% over July, tying June as the strongest month of 2026 so far. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the segment captured a record 60.6% of all new vehicle sales, staying above the 60% mark for a second straight month and well clear of the 48.8% share recorded in August 2025.

The powertrain split was stark. Fully electric sales climbed 27.8% year-on-year to 1.161 million units, a new high for the year, while plug-in hybrids snapped a two-month growth streak and slipped 0.9% to 482,000. Production rose 18.9% to 1.653 million units, and cumulative NEV sales for the first eight months stood at 10.65 million, or 52.4% of the overall market.

Exports remained the backbone of growth. Automakers shipped 526,000 NEVs abroad, roughly 130% more than a year earlier, meaning electrified models made up more than half of China's total vehicle exports for a third consecutive month. Domestic NEV demand, by contrast, fell 4.6% to 1.118 million, leaving the January-August home-market tally down 10.8% at 7.215 million.

The broader market stayed fragile: total sales eased 5.1% to 2.712 million, domestic sales dropped 24.2% for a fifth straight month of declines exceeding 20%, and home-market sales of conventional fuel vehicles nearly halved. CAAM credited expanded regional purchase subsidies and automaker promotions for the monthly rebound, while overall vehicle exports topped one million units for the third month running at 1.01 million, up 65.3%.
