Horse Powertrain's 3DHT200: a 13-in-1 plug-in hybrid drive with 4,920 Nm of wheel torque for off-roaders

Horse Powertrain, the hybrid-drive joint venture set up by Geely and Renault, has introduced a highly integrated plug-in hybrid drive unit called the 3DHT200. The thirteen-in-one package combines the P1 and P3 electric motors, their controllers, a three-speed dedicated hybrid gearbox, the onboard charger, power electronics and various control modules into a single unit. It is the third member of Horse's 3DHT family and the first aimed squarely at off-road use.

On paper, the system pairs a 110 kW (148 hp) P1 motor — used to crank the engine and generate electricity — with a 230 kW (308 hp) P3 traction motor that can spin past 20,000 rpm. It runs in pure-electric, series and parallel modes, behaving like a range extender in city traffic and switching to direct parallel drive at higher speeds. Thanks to the consolidation, Horse says the unit is 10% smaller than before, while a new permanent-magnet layout lifts torque density by 15% and power density by 20%.

The headline figure is wheel torque: up to 4,920 Nm, which Horse says is enough for a 45-degree climb. With the P3 motor driving the wheels through a single-speed reduction while the engine gets the three-speed box, the company claims 0-100 km/h in the three-second range and fuel consumption of around 5 L/100 km even in a large SUV.

The 3DHT200 will make its debut in the Galaxy Cruiser 700, Geely's first boxy off-roader, where it is joined by a rear motor to form an e-4WD layout with a total output of 830 kW (1,113 hp). Further powertrain details are expected to emerge closer to that model's launch.
