BYD is expected to begin selling a plug-in hybrid hatchback in Brazil in February 2027, according to a schedule reported by CNN columnist Jorge Moraes. The car will be called Dolphin GT in Brazil, distinguishing it from the all-electric Dolphin already on sale there. Motor1 Brasil reports that initial units will be imported from China, while the model is also in line for possible assembly at BYD’s Camaçari plant in Bahia. The report does not specify when local production might begin.

The Dolphin GT is expected to use BYD’s DM-i plug-in hybrid system, paired with a flex-fuel engine adapted to run on ethanol. BYD has said it plans to bring flex-fuel capability to its Brazilian hybrid range, with the Atto 2 among the models cited in that strategy. Technical details for the Brazilian hatch have not yet been released, and it is unclear whether the DM-i badge will appear on the car locally.

Despite sharing the Dolphin name, the hybrid is described as a distinct design rather than a derivative of the current electric hatch. BYD is aiming it at Brazil’s high-volume compact-hatch segment, where the report lists the Volkswagen Polo, Chevrolet Onix, Hyundai i20 and Honda City hatchback as rivals. Its anticipated price is about R$130,000, though no official price has been announced.
