BYD Vietnam introduced the Sealion 5 plug-in hybrid SUV on October 21, adding a lower-priced model below the Sealion 6. Imported from Thailand, it is offered in Essential and Premium versions at list prices of VND 739 million and VND 789 million. The first 1,000 customers to put down a deposit before November 30 can buy at reduced prices of VND 659 million and VND 709 million, respectively.
The Sealion 5 is currently the most affordable BYD model in Vietnam using the company’s DM-i Super Hybrid system. Its launch prices place it among C-segment SUV alternatives such as the Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V. With the stated promotions included, its price approaches that of some smaller B-segment SUVs, including the Toyota Yaris Cross.
The SUV measures 4,735 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,710 mm tall, with a 2,712 mm wheelbase and 175 mm of unladen ground clearance. Both trims use a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and a front-mounted electric motor, producing a combined 214 hp. The Essential has a 13.08-kWh Blade battery and a stated electric-only range of 82 km; the Premium uses an 18.3-kWh pack for 110 km. BYD claims up to 1,200 km of total travel for the Premium with a full battery and fuel tank.
Both versions support 3.3-kW AC charging, while the Premium can also be equipped for 18-kW DC charging. Its additional equipment includes driver-assistance features, powered front seats and tailgate, wireless phone charging, a 12.8-inch central display and an eight-speaker audio system. The two trims look much alike from outside; the Essential lacks roof rails.
