BYD is preparing the Mako, a pickup derived from the Song Plus, for the Brazilian market in 2027. The company plans to build it at its Camaçari factory in Bahia, making the Mako the first BYD model developed in China specifically for local production and sales outside China, according to the report. A dedicated production line is planned for the truck.
BYD’s best-case estimate is up to 20,000 Mako sales in its first year, equivalent to an average of about 1,666 vehicles a month. A lower scenario puts 2027 volume at roughly 15,000 units, or around 1,250 monthly. The report says the higher target would put the pickup in direct competition with the Ram Rampage, while neither scenario is expected to dislodge the Fiat Toro from its lead among unibody mid-size pickups.
The Mako is also expected to compete with the Ford Maverick and Renault Niagara. The article says even the lower forecast would exceed anticipated Maverick sales; it estimates the Niagara could reach about 1,300 monthly units, though Renault’s target is not known. BYD commercial director Henrique Antunes said commercial sales depend on completing all phases of the Brazilian factory’s production setup, as the Mako is intended to be built in Brazil rather than imported from China or another market.
