Brazil's week was about two things pulling in opposite directions: Chinese brands keep adding models and local production, while the domestic industry asked the government to limit imports from makers without a local plant.

Imports under pressure, local content rising

Anfavea, the automakers' association, raised the issue with Vice President Geraldo Alckmin on October 29. It pointed to 254,900 vehicles imported from China between January and September, up 106.4% year on year, and asked for limits on companies without local production (report).

BYD's Camaçari complex in Bahia is the clearest counter-example. BYD says it has built more than 150,000 vehicles there and is bringing stamping, welding and paint into testing (report). It is targeting 50% local content by January 2027 and has approved more than 400 suppliers, with 250 more in talks (report); full-process production is expected between November and December (report). One date has slipped: BYD has set no new start date for local Song Plus production, which it had promised for 2026 (report). The plant has also paused King sedan assembly to give the Atto 2, which has about 7,000 pre-orders, nearly all of the line's capacity (report).

Chery is making local production a condition. It says an electric QQ would be built in Brazil, not imported (report), and it is in talks over Jaguar Land Rover's Itatiaia plant, with no deal confirmed (report). It also aims to sell 500,000 vehicles a year in Brazil by 2031 (report).

New launches: from R$129,990 to R$499,900

At the entry end, BAIC began selling the Arcfox T1 at R$129,990 (Pro) and R$139,900 (Max) through 50 dealers (report), and will launch the larger Arcfox T5 on November 11 (report). Dongfeng's reported prices are R$135,900 for the Box E3 and R$169,900 for the Vigo E2+ (report). Caoa Changan added the CS55 PHEV at R$189,990, imported from China, next to the locally built Infinity at R$154,990 (report).

At the top, Jetour's G700 plug-in hybrid costs R$469,900 in five-seat form and R$499,900 in six-seat form, with sales starting November 14 (report). MG launched the IM6 at R$368,990 and R$439,990 (report). GWM's Tank 400 is scheduled for November 9–10 at a reported R$399,000, above the Tank 300's R$342,000 (report). Denza says the Yangwang U8 should arrive in 2027 at more than R$2 million (report).

Sales and discounting

The Haval H6 is provisionally Brazil's best-selling medium SUV in 2026, with 44,020 registrations against 43,534 for the Jeep Compass (report). The BYD Atto 2 entered the top 10 compact SUVs with 1,411 registrations through the 28th (report). BYD is also discounting: the Song Pro GL is advertised at R$161,490 against a R$189,990 list price (report), and dealers offer the 2027 Song Plus at R$217,890 versus R$249,990 (report).

What's coming

BAIC's next models are the B30 hybrid in the second quarter of 2027 (report), the B60 with no launch date as it weighs waiting for a flex-fuel system (report), and a flex-fuel X55 hybrid in 2028 (report). Chery's 2027 plans cover Omoda, iCaur and Lepas (report), including the Omoda 4 hybrid-flex at an expected R$139,990 to R$149,990 (report). A camouflaged BYD Dolphin GT plug-in hybrid has been spotted, with a February 2027 debut reported (report).

What it means

  • Flex-fuel hybrids are the common thread in BAIC's and Chery's plans, which suggests brands see local fuel compatibility as part of the product, not an add-on.
  • Local assembly is moving from announcement to testing at BYD, even as one model's timetable slips; the import-limit request is the counterweight to watch.
