Chery has registered design drawings for a compact-looking, double-cab monocoque pickup with South Africa’s patent service, according to images reported by Cars.co.za. The vehicle’s styling appears close to the Omoda X, an off-road-oriented model from Chery’s Omoda brand. The patent views show the front, side and rear, but do not confirm the pickup’s dimensions or when it might be launched.
Its size is a key uncertainty. Autoesporte has reported, citing Chery sources, that the company plans a midsize monocoque pickup to compete with the Fiat Toro, Renault Niagara and Ford Maverick. However, the patent vehicle looks smaller, based on its wheels and apparently short wheelbase. The Omoda X is said to measure 4.65 metres long with a 2.70-metre wheelbase, and a larger 4.95-metre version has also been discussed; that bigger vehicle could potentially underpin the pickup. An Omoda-branded version with a cargo bed is another possibility, not a confirmed plan.
For Brazil, the article raises possible powertrains including a 1.5-litre turbo flex-fuel engine, with or without a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, as well as a plug-in hybrid. These remain speculation: Chery has not confirmed the pickup’s size, specifications, market availability or launch timing. The article also cautions that the patent images may not accurately indicate the final vehicle’s proportions.
