Chery’s new Lepas brand has entered Australia with the L6 electric SUV and says the model is based on LEXP, a platform developed specifically for Lepas. The company has not detailed how that architecture differs from platforms used elsewhere in the wider Chery Group, and the L6 shares substantial similarities with the China-market Chery Fulwin T7 and the Australian Jaecoo J7.
The L6 and Fulwin T7 have matching stated dimensions: 4570mm long, 1852mm wide and a 2700mm wheelbase. Both use a 65kWh battery and produce 275Nm of motor torque, while the Lepas is rated at 160kW against 178kW for the Fulwin. The T7 is understood to use Chery’s established T1X platform, which also underpins several Chery and Jaecoo models. Since both T1X and LEXP can accommodate electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, LEXP could be an adaptation of T1X, though that has not been confirmed.
Chery Australia’s COO said the vehicles are related but cautioned against treating domestic Chinese and export-market branding as identical. Lepas is currently positioned as an export-focused brand, making LEXP distinct to its vehicles outside China. Australian L6s also receive chassis adjustments and locally tuned safety systems. More Lepas models are expected in Australia before 2028, including a plug-in hybrid L6, with sales through dedicated dealerships.
