Freelander 8 claims a 6,002-meter Guinness altitude record in Tibet — the engineering behind the climb

Chery Jaguar Land Rover's Freelander 8 drove to 6,002.33 meters above sea level in Tibet on August 22, setting a Guinness World Record for hybrid vehicles that the company publicized at the SUV's September 3 China launch. The run cleared the previous benchmark of 5,980.05 meters, established by BYD's Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 in July 2024, by 22.28 meters.

Thin air is the core challenge. At 6,000 meters, ambient pressure sits near 47.2 kPa, so oxygen availability falls below half of sea-level levels, yet the 1.5-litre turbocharged range extender still held 80% of its rated generating output, with the turbo raising its pressure ratio to compensate. The route added about 1,480 meters of trail and 200 meters of vertical gain over loose scree and unpaved shale.

The 610 kW dual-motor AWD drivetrain includes a two-speed rear gearbox whose first gear multiplies torque 1.5 to 1, yielding up to 8,000 Nm at the wheels. That low-range-style ratio cuts motor torque and current demands precisely where air cooling loses effectiveness. Unlike the body-on-frame Bao 5, this is a unibody SUV — 5,118 mm long with a 3,040 mm wheelbase, air suspension and CDC — and Chery-JLR says it finished without structural chassis damage, though no inspection data or tyre specs were released.

Built at the Changshu plant in Jiangsu, the Freelander 8 launched at 289,900–379,900 yuan (roughly $41,000–53,700), overlapping the Li Auto L8 and Aito M8. Hardware highlights include a 60.33 kWh CATL Freevoy battery on an 800V architecture and Huawei's Qiankun ADS 5 assistance with roof-mounted LiDAR. For buyers in China's crowded 300,000-yuan SUV class, everyday usability will matter more than the record itself.
