Geely EX5 shows off a huge frunk and rear-drive makeover ahead of September 21 launch

Geely's updated EX5 has surfaced in China days before its official debut on September 21, and the standout feature is a generously sized front trunk. Photos posted by an anonymous enthusiast show the storage bay under the bonnet, marked with a 50 kg maximum payload — though Geely hasn't published the volume yet. For reference, the smaller E2 (sold abroad as the EX2) manages 70 liters up front.

The frunk hints at deeper mechanical changes than a simple facelift. The charging port has migrated from the front fender to the rear, in line with a switch to rear-wheel drive, and the filing submitted under the Galaxy E5 name lists a single TZ184QY301 rear motor making 245 kW (329 hp) — 114 hp more than the outgoing car. Top speed rises from 175 km/h to 201 km/h. Power comes from an LFP battery of undisclosed capacity. The SUV is now 4,636 mm long, 21 mm longer than before, on a 2,750 mm wheelbase.

Beyond the drivetrain, the EX5 gains new bumpers, semi-hidden door handles, a roof-mounted LiDAR, fender-mounted side cameras and an extra camera in the roof spoiler — hardware supporting the G-Pilot H5 assistance suite with navigated driving on city roads and highways. Geely Galaxy PR chief Shan Aifu said on Weibo that the styling is largely unchanged, but the car has received "a comprehensive overhaul and upgrade" of its structure, components and electronics.

The refresh arrives at a crucial moment: EX5 deliveries totaled 40,776 units from January through August 2026, down 45.9% year on year. The model also serves as one of Geely's flagships in overseas markets.
