GWM says its first V8-powered model for Australia is scheduled to arrive in 2027, and the engine may not be paired with hybrid assistance. Speaking at the launch of the H7 SUV, GWM Australia and New Zealand COO John Kett said at least one V8 would join the range next year. Asked about electrification, he indicated the V8 would be a standalone engine rather than a hybrid system.
The Tank 700 is the model most likely to be headed to Australia, though GWM has not named it as the local V8 vehicle. The company’s chairman, Jack Wei, previously said the off-road SUV would get a conventional V8 for markets including Australia and New Zealand. GWM has also announced a separate high-performance V8 plug-in hybrid for its GF supercar; that system is expected to deliver about 600kW and 1,000Nm.
The Tank 700 is already offered in China with electrified powertrains. Its Hi4-T version pairs a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 plug-in hybrid with a nine-speed automatic and mechanical four-wheel drive, while the road-focused Hi4-Z uses a 2.0-litre turbo engine and two electric motors for 635kW and 1,195Nm. A non-hybrid V8 could give GWM a performance-focused alternative to the Mercedes-AMG G63 and Land Rover Defender OCTA. The company says it plans several Australian launches in 2027 as it pursues a place among the country’s top-five car brands.
