Plug-in hybrids dominated Pakistan's Chinese-car news this week, and the pricing pressure around them was explicit: Chery says sales tax on plug-in hybrids has nearly doubled, and it responded with a price cut. Behind the model news, BYD's local plant moved closer to production and PakWheels published a run of ownership-cost guides.
Price and tax: plug-in hybrids
Chery Pakistan cut the Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid by PKR 850,000, to PKR 9,499,000 from PKR 10,349,000, in a limited-stock offer that includes a 7 kW home charger. The company links the move to the near-doubling of sales tax on plug-in hybrids. Elsewhere in Chery's range, a PakWheels review of the Tiggo 8 PHEV lists an ex-factory price of PKR 10,999,000, and an owner report on the Tiggo 9 PHEV puts the on-road cost of that car at roughly PKR 14.5 million to PKR 15 million after taxes and registration. The owner also flagged a quarterly oil-service requirement for warranty coverage that some owners want relaxed.
Launches and showroom activity
GWM's Islamabad roadshow put nine electrified vehicles on display, five of them with announced ex-factory prices from Rs 8,599,000 for the ORA 5 EV to Rs 22,500,000 for the Tank 500 PHEV. Four more, including the Haval H7 PHEV, are shown as upcoming with no Pakistan prices. The tour continues to Lahore on October 24.
Geely Auto Pakistan has teased an announcement dated October 24 without saying what it is. The expected lineup is the EX2 and EX5 electric models and the Starray plug-in hybrid, initially as imports, with local assembly planned later in Karachi. Pakistan specifications, prices and booking details have not been announced.
Local assembly and ownership costs
HUBCO says BYD's Pakistan plant remains on schedule to start before the end of 2026, targeting 1,000 to 1,500 vehicles a month at first. Early vehicles will rely entirely on imported components, and the stated 80% localization goal is a longer-term target, so lower prices are not guaranteed.
PakWheels' parts-price guides show what ownership can cost after a crash: the Changan Oshan X7 needs Rs 499,058 for two headlights, front bumper and grille, and the Deepal S05 needs Rs 598,608 for both headlamps and both front bumper fascias, before labor. Separately, 179 electric buses from China arrived at Karachi, consigned to Margalla Heavy Industries; officials have not said where they will run.
What it means
- Tax changes, not just exchange rates, are now driving plug-in hybrid pricing, and brands are absorbing part of it through offers.
- Local assembly at BYD's plant starts on imported parts, so price effects will come later, if at all.
- Geely's October 24 event is the next test of how many new models arrive this autumn; nothing about its content is confirmed.
